Today I viewed the film Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan is a world war two film set during the invasion of Normandy. The film follows an army captain and his squad as they attempt to find and rescue a paratrooper who is the last surviving brother of four servicemen. The film is higly praised for its intense and gruesome opening scene which shows the assault on Omaha Beach. The sequence displays a more realistic look on the battles that were fought during the war. Saving Private Ryan shares similar themes as the novel Two Wars by Nate Self such as courage, leadership and bravery. Nate Self had to find the bravery and courage to continue on after his traumatic experience in the Afghan Mountains such as the members of the squad in Saving Private Ryan have to do when handed with such a challenging and life threatening mission. When under fire by al-Qaida nate Self had to find leadership within himself to comand his men despite the chaos similar to how the captain of the squad had to keep his emotions under control and accept the deaths of the men under his command despite the bloodshed. Although Saving Private Ryan is a great world war two film that truly shows the intensity, gruesomeness and wickedness of the war I do not recommend this film to all. I say this because Saving Private Ryan is a war film for a reason, there are going to be scenes and evnets that may be too graphic for some such as the opening 27 minute long sequence that shows the death and bloodshed on the beaches of Normandy as well as many other scenes throughout the film. Personally I loved the graphicness of the battle scenes and the way the director Steven Spielberg displays the horror and cruelty of war in such a unique way unlike any other war film to date. Overall Saving Private Ryan is a fantastic motion picture with great performances throughout the entire film and ultimately a very powerful moving cinema unlike any. I highly recommend Saving Private Ryan to to others but with the warning that if you are willing to view this motion picture keep in mind of the graphic and gruesome scenes throughout the duration of the film.
